Substitute Authorization Course to be offered

The Fort Dodge Community School District, in collaboration with Prairie Lakes AEA, will be offering the Substitute Authorization Course on Jan. 17 and Feb. 7, 2022.

Participants must attend class at the FDCSD from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

“This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy being around kids and want to make a difference in our community,” said Kim Whitmore, FDCSD human resources director. “Substituting also offers a flexible schedule making it a great option for retirees or parents who want a schedule similar to their students.”

Requirements for class participation include a bachelor’s or associate’s degree or 60 semester hours of coursework in any field completed at an accredited college or university. Participants must be at least 21 years of age.

“There is a misconception that you have to have a degree or background in education to be a substitute teacher,” Whitmore said. “The truth is, the coursework can be in any field. A degree or coursework in education or experience in education is not required.”

The cost of the course is $100 plus the cost of the handbook.

To register for the Substitute Authorization Course contact Emma Lampe at 515.574.5650 or elampe@fdschools.org by Dec. 31.
