Man treated for gunshot wound to hand
A Fort Dodge man was treated for a gunshot wound to his hand after Fort Dodge Police say he discharged his weapon Sunday evening in an apparent accident.
Fort Dodge Police said the 23-year-old shot himself after discharging his newly purchased gun in the 300 block of 11th Avenue North. A log of police calls for service indicate he arrived to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center by 5:21 p.m. Sunday.
“The male was lucky to have only sustained minor injuries,” said Capt. Ryan Gruenberg, public information officer for the Fort Dodge Police Department. “This is a great reminder for those handling firearms to use extreme caution and know how the weapon functions before ever loading it with live ammunition. Taking the time to ensure that proper safety precautions are being taken can prevent an unfortunate accident.”
