IOWA CITY (AP) – An Iowa City man has received a 50-year prison sentence for beating a 20-month-old boy to death in 2012.

Jorge Perez, 23, accepted a plea agreement Wednesday afternoon.

Perez was charged in the death of Marcus Balderas, the 20-month-old son of Perez’s then-girlfriend, Mireya Balderas. He entered an Alford plea in May, in which doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence to win a conviction.

Perez was convicted of one count of child endangerment resulting in death. He testified Wednesday that he did not kill the boy.

Assistant Johnson County Attorney Dana Christiansen said the county agreed not to pursue additional charges against Perez, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of child abuse that preceded his death.
