Iowan dies after falling from bluff

RED WING, Minn. (AP) – Authorities said a hiker from Iowa has fallen to his death from a bluff trail in southern Minnesota.

Employees at a wastewater treatment plant located at the base of the bluff in Red Wing called police Tuesday afternoon after spotting the stranded hiker on a steep incline on the bluff.

Not long after first responders arrived, they saw the man fall. Police identified the victim as Frank Gritters, 81, of Pella. Officials said he had been hiking with his wife on a dangerous portion of a trail that has been closed for two years.

The 340-foot bluff is a scenic overlook of the Mississippi River.
