State tree nursery closing proposed

WEBSTER CITY – Owners of commercial nurseries and landowners who purchase trees from the state forestry nursery in Ames will gather at 2 p.m. today at the Webster City Municipal Airport, 1524 240th St., Webster City, to discuss the proposed closing of the nursery.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced in January it may close the 80-year-old Ames facility, saying it no longer covers its costs.

The nursery could be closed as soon as Sunday.

The DNR is proposing moving the Ames nursery’s stock to its other nursery in Montrose in east central Iowa, if it reaches an agreement with the Iowa Prison Industries to work it.
