CDC urges flu shots for everyone

The Centers for Disease Control is urging everyone who is 6 months or older to get a flu shot this year and every year, according to Webster County Public Health.

There are flu shot options – traditional flu vaccine, which is trivalent, that is made to protect against three different flu viruses; quadrivalent vaccine, which is made to protect against four vaccines; and a high-dose trivalent vaccine, approved for people who are 65 and older.

According to CDC, it is better for anyone over age 65 to get high-dose flu vaccine with the reasoning is it is best to be protected more against the three most common strains, than to be protected less against all four.

According to the CDC, you cannot get the flu from the flu shot. The risk of the flu shot causing serious harm is extremely small. However, a vaccine like any medicine may rarely cause serious problems, such as allergic reactions.

Some people cannot get the flu vaccine, including anyone with an egg allergy. People should talk with their doctors before receiving any vaccines.

The CDC has not expressed a preference for which flu vaccine people should get this season. Anyone who questions which vaccine is best for them, should talk with their medical provider.

The Webster County Public Health Department, 723 First Ave. S., routinely holds walk-in flu vaccines clinics throughout the flu season.
