Bruce Perry to perform at Grace Lutheran

Grace Lutheran Church will celebrate Bruce Perry’s 25th anniversary of music making as Jive for Five Brass Quintet joins organist and pianist Perry in concert at 3 p.m., Feb. 14 at the church, 211 S. Ninth St.. The combination of brass and the king of instruments will provide a festive celebration of a quarter century of music leadership. The program will include Gustav Mahler’s “Sextet for Brass and Piano,” Craig Phillips’ “Suite for Brass and Organ,” and works by Richard Wagner, Maurice Ravel, Camile Saint-Saens, and George Bizet.

Organist Bruce Perry has served as worship and music coordinator at Grace Lutheran since 1991. In addition to planning and helping lead all worship services, Perry directs the adult choir, bell choirs, praise team, and coordinates soloists and small groups. During his tenure, the church has purchased a Schimmel grand piano, purchased three additional octaves of handbells, enlarged and renovated the church’s pipe organ, remodeled the sanctuary for improved aesthetics and acoustics, installed a new audio-visual system, and greatly diversified worship styles. The church has become a frequent venue for community musical events. He holds degrees in music performance from Luther College and the University of Iowa. In addition to his duties at Grace, he conducts Fort Dodge Choral Society and operates a private studio for aspiring musicians.

Jive for Five members Dan Cassady, trombone; Dave Swaroff, trumpet; Kathy Yoakam, horn; Tim Miller, trumpet; and Paul Bloomquist, tuba have become familiar to many area audiences. The quintet has a repertoire of more than 300 tunes which include everything from Bach, the Beatles, Brubeck, Ellington, Gershwin & Miller to Gabrieli, Mozart, Karl King, Sousa, Fats Waller and Broadway Musical Scores. Besides teaching and performing in Jive for Five, they are also busy with other organizations including Fort Dodge Choral Society, the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, the nationally renowned Karl King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge and other top performing groups. The members of Jive for Five are also in demand as private instructors and clinicians. All maintain active private teaching studios.

The public is invited to the concert. There is no admission charge, but freewill offerings will be accepted.
