Some rural roads in Humboldt, Kossuth and Wright counties will benefit from a major investment of federal funding.

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded $76.2 million to Iowa.

A little over $7 million of that total will be used for safety upgrades in nine northern Iowa counties, including Humboldt, Kossuth and Wright counties.

The funding was announced Monday by U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, a Republican.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that the money will be used for these types of upgrades:

• Installing reflective edge lines and center lines.

• Placing rumble strips in the center and along the side of roads.

• Widening the shoulders of roads.

• Updating signs.

• Installing flashing beacons.

• Building transverse rumble strips that alert drivers to nearby intersections.

• Clearing lines of sight at intersections.

Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Palo Alto and Winnebago counties will also get some of the $7 million for similar projects.

The projects were selected based on risk analyses from each county.

"Iowa families and manufacturers depend on the safety and reliability of our roads from everyday work and travel," Grassley said in a written statement. "I voted for the bipartisan infrastructure law with Iowans's future in mind, and now $76 million are flowing to our state as a result."
