Iowa Central Community College President Jesse Ulrich has received a top honor that Iowa State University presents to graduates of its education school.

He received the Virgil Lagomarcino Laureate Award Friday during a presentation in Stephens Auditorium on the Iowa State campus in Ames.

The award honors a College of Health and Human Services graduate whose professional accomplishments have made a significant impact on education. The college's education department is part of the College of Health and Human Services. Lagomarcino was the first dean of education at Iowa State.

Ulrich said he was "humbled and honored" to receive the award.

"This is just a reminder of all the great people that have been around me," he added.

Topping his list of those people is his wife, Amy. He said the support of his wife and family have made his professional accomplishments possible.

Ulrich added that he was also blessed with "great boards that believed in the work we've been doing for students."

Ulrich earned his master's degree from Iowa State in 2008. He earned his Ph.D there in 2017.

He served on the university's Education Preparation Advisory Committee from 2015 to 2021. He has been the president of Iowa Central since 2021. He was the superintendent of the Fort Dodge Community School District from 2018 to 2021.
