A new independent living option will debut at Friendship Haven next year.

The retirement community announced Friday that people will be able to move into the apartment area now called The Ridge starting Jan. 1.

The Ridge will be in the apartments that used to be a certified assisted living neighborhood called River Ridge. The neighborhood called The Gardens will remain as assisted living.

"More people are telling us they want less to take care of, but they aren't looking for less independence," Julie Thorson, president and chief executive officer of Friendship Haven, said in a written statement.

“The Ridge responds to that," she said. "It offers a unique independent living option with no entrance fee, giving people greater flexibility and choice while still being connected to the people, activities, and amenities that make Friendship Haven such a special community. Ultimately, it's about creating more choices for people as they think about what they want their next chapter to look like."

The Ridge is designed for adults 55 and older.

It includes studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Reservations are now being accepted. Call (515) 573-6000 or visit www.friendshiphaven.org.
