2 min read

A man who had been charged with trying to break into a Fort Dodge school last month and then setting a small fire at his home has been sentenced to probation, according to court records.

Richard L. Beebe, 18, of 118 10th St. N.W., pleaded guilty to third degree attempted burglary and third degree arson.

Court documents show he was sentenced to two years in prison and an $855 fine, both of which were suspended. He was ordered to serve two years of probation.

He was initially charged with third degree attempted burglary, first degree arson and third degree criminal mischief.

Fort Dodge police reported that he tried to break into Feelhaver Elementary School, 1300 14th Ave. N., between 1 a.m. and 1:15 a.m. Sept. 1. In a criminal complaint filed against him, officers wrote that Beebe "broke off access control key readers with the intent of entering the property and consuming food and sleeping." He did not succeed at getting into the school.

The key readers were fixed later that morning and the incident did not have any impact on the school day.

Also on Sept. 1 between 8 a.m. and 8:24 a.m. Beebe set a fire on the porch of his home, police reported.

In his written guilty plea, Beebe indicated that he set a pile of clothes on fire. The fire was small and did not result in a Fire Department response.
