Susan Ahlers Leman believed the arts could change lives and strengthen communities. A new scholarship in her memory will carry that love of the arts forward by helping students from Fort Dodge and Webster City to pursue degrees in music and theater.

On Tuesday, the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association announced the Susan Ahlers Leman Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship will provide recipients with $1,000 toward their freshman year of college and an additional $1,000 for their sophomore year if they continue in their program. Applications are due March 1, 2027.

For Shelly Bottorff, executive director of the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association and Leman's sister, the scholarship carries a personal significance.

"My sister, Susan, believed wholeheartedly in the power of the arts and the potential of young people," said Bottorff. "Creating this scholarship in her memory is such a meaningful way for our family to keep her spirit alive while helping students pursue their own dreams. I know she would be so proud to see her love for the arts continue to make a difference in the lives of others."

Leman, who died in 2024, helped revitalize the Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association. Beginning in 2014, she worked to strengthen the organization's presence and build financial support for its work in Fort Dodge and surrounding communities.

According to Bottorff, her advocacy helped secure operational support from the Fort Dodge Community Foundation, emphasizing the role of the arts in quality of life and economic development. That investment helped the association grow from six member organizations to more than 60 today.

Leman also helped to secure private support for the arts, including a $100,000 gift from philanthropist Marlys Smith.

The Susan Ahlers Leman Memorial Scholarship is intended to carry that work forward by supporting students who demonstrate both artistic dedication and a commitment to their communities.

It will be awarded annually to a student originally from Fort Dodge or Webster City who is pursuing a degree in music, theater or a related performing arts field. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, academic achievement and community involvement in addition to their commitment to the arts.

Applications are available through high school school counselors' offices. Students can also request applications and detailed eligibility requirements by emailing fdfinearts@gmail.com.
