Was it Col. Mustard in the drawing room with the pipe wrench?
Generations of people who have enjoyed the board game "Clue" have asked that question.
This week, audiences at the Hawkeye Community Theatre production of "Clue" will have a chance to ask themselves the same question.
A theatrical version of the murder mystery game will unfold on stage starting Wednesday and concluding Saturday. There will be 7 p.m. performances Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday plus a 2 p.m. performance Saturday.
All performances will be at the Hawkeye Community Theatre, 521 N. 12th St.
Admission is $10.
"It's definitely a comedy, with a murder mystery thrown into the mix," said Kari Horn, the play's director. "There are plenty of twists, turns, unexpected surprises and ridiculous situations."
The game, the 1985 movie starring Tim Curry and the play revolve around a murder in a mansion. Anyone of the characters could have committed the crime with any of a wide variety of weapons.
The board game now on store shelves includes at least one recently introduced character. But the play features the original, now iconic characters: Miss Scarlett, Col. Mustard, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green and Mrs White.
"Clue" was selected because I wanted to choose a show that combined comedy with a little bit of spooky October atmosphere," Horn said. "It's a story that many people are already familiar with, whether from the classic board game or the movie , but seeing it come to life on stage brings an entirely different experience.”
"If you've ever played the game, watched the movie or just enjoy a good mystery, this is a show you won't want to miss," she added. "And who knows, you might even solve the mystery before the final curtain. Just remember, everyone is a suspect and absolutely no one is above suspicion.”
