Ella Johnson needed a change and that decision changed her life.

Johnson knew she wanted to become something more and knew who she could lean on.

"After my sophomore year, I decided that I wanted to take a bigger step with Jesus," Johnson esaid. "I had been going through some things and knew that's what I needed. Last summer, I decided to get baptized although I was baptized as a baby as well.

"I knew I loved Jesus and I wanted to give everything to him. Everyday I try to make choices that reflect that and what Jesus would want me to."

The new guidance has helped her in her path as a senior at Fort Dodge Senior High School.

Johnson is currently taking part in the Fort Dodge All-American Marching Band and cross country.

She takes part in all bands as well as choir, speech and has been a part of FDSH's musicals and fall plays and speech.

"In fourth grade Mrs. (Tara) Smith (FD Middle School band teacher) brought a few students to Feelhaver. My sister played the violin, but I knew I would rather be in band," Johnson said. "I ended up choosing the trombone because I thought it would be the easiest. I think every instrument can still bring struggles, but now I've realized how crazy cool the instrument is.

"For choir and music in general, I used to think it was weird, and weird kids did it. But I am that person and I've embraced it. I love music and I love that we have so much more than just choir and band, and there are more branches to it like jazz, marching, and musical."

Being a part of a band has helped build friendships and relationships.

"Band definitely has its ups and downs, but that's how any family would be," Johnson said. "My favorite part of being in a band is jazz band and marching band.

"Although I dread those morning rehearsals, the end result is so rewarding. The bond is beautiful and I've made most of my friendships through the band."

Music has been a big part of Johnson's life as well as the urge to try new things.

"Once I started (music) I never let it go," Johnson said. "In eighth grade I decided to try wrestling and that wasn't my cup of tea. Then my sophomore year, my friends Brooklyn (Kaloupek) and Parker (Gayle) convinced me to join cross country. I was skeptical, but I went for it. I ended up not going out for it my junior year, but I came back this year. It was the best decision I ever made.

"As for my junior year, I took the half marathon class. Throughout training, I got injured, but I kept training and I was determined to run in Des Moines in May. That was very far off the limb, but was so rewarding and so worth it because now I can say I've ran a half marathon."

Along with cross country Johnson has been involved in soccer for the Dodgers.

"Music wasn't my passion from the start, as I thought I would be more involved in athletics," Johnson said. "I've played soccer since I was little, so I've always stuck with it.

"Although I do play sports, I would say I have more passion for music. My sister was involved in music as well, so it inspired me to do it as well."

Having so many activities on her plate has helped Johnson develop bonds.

"I met so many people and have formed so many relationships in all of my activities," Johnson said. "It's important to always have people on your side and I like to stay busy.

"Being a Dodger is your home outside of home. Everyone belongs and that's not something every place has."

As her senior year winds down there will be things to look forward to and things that Johnson will miss.

"I'm going to miss the people, who have helped me stop being a shy little girl, which you wouldn't even know now," Johnson said. "I have built so many friendships throughout high school and I don't want to say goodbye.

"I'm looking forward to walking across the stage at graduation with my friends and family cheering me on and being content and proud of myself in where I stand and what I've accomplished."

Johnson has had a number of influences that have helped guide her through the years.

"My twin brother (Eli) has been a big influence as he has always been by my side," Johnson said. "Eli is my best friend. We are involved in almost everything together and I wouldn't want it any other way. Having a built-in best friend and someone on your side is something I'm super grateful for.

"Also my parents and grandparents. They've always given me the best advice. My aunt Jamie as well, as she is one of my favorite people ever and never fails to make my day great."

After high school Johnson plans on attending Iowa Central Community College for nursing and then attending the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
