Iowa Central Community College will soon own about 10 acres of land just west of its Fort Dodge campus.

The college's Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to buy the property from the Richard D. Brown Revocable Trust for $225,000. The sale is scheduled to close on Oct. 1.

The property is across U.S. Highway 169 from the west entrance of the campus. The addresses are 1108 A St. West and 1016 A St. West.

"One of the challenges we have at Iowa Central is that we're landlocked,' college President Jesse Ulrich said. "It is wise for us to consider any nearby property that becomes available for purchase."

He said the houses and other buildings on the properties will be demolished.

According to Ulrich, there are seven acres of tillable land on the property that will be used for agriculture or horticulture classes.

But the long-term use of the property has not been determined yet. Ulrich said the possibilities could include more student housing, a transportation facility or a maintenance building.

Money to pay for the real estate purchase came from the college's housing fund.
