Council OKs northwest corridor work

The next phase of work that is transforming the look of the Third Avenue Northwest corridor was approved by the City Council Monday.
That work will include storm sewer and water main improvements, 1,100 feet of dual use path, tree plantings, benches and lighting.
Doyle Construction, of Fort Dodge, was hired to do the work at a cost of $1,028,562.05.
The city government has $1.5 million from the Comprehensive Neighborhood Revitalization Program operated by the Iowa Economic Development Authority to pay for the project..
Councilwoman Megan Secor was absent from the otherwise unanimous vote to award the contact.
Other bidders for the job were Jensen Builders Ltd, Fort Dodge, $1.181,289.50; Castor Construction, Fort Dodge, $1,216,012.20; and Reilly Construction, Ossian, $1,281,749.
That work dovetails with a handful of public and private sector projects that are transforming what is a busy gateway to Fort Dodge from the north and west.
Last year the slope of the hill where Hawkeye Avenue and Third Avenue Northwest meet was reduced.
Currently, Third Avenue Northwest between Seventh and 10th streets northwest is being rebuilt.
And a 64-unit apartment complex called The River District is being built on about three acres on the south side of Third Avenue Northwest between Fifth and 10th streets northwest.
In other business, the council approved a $4,596,000 loan from the state's revolving loan
fund, which will be used to finance various improvements to the water system.
The loan has a 3 percent interest rate and will be paid off over 20 years. Revenue from the $5 month water initiative fee will be used to retire the debt.
The council also approved the first reading of a measure impacting appeals to the city's Board of Adjustment that are based on dimensions or measurements. Based on a new state law, the measure reduced the number of criteria an appeal to the Board of Adjustment must meet to get a variance from the zoning laws.
