The clouds cleared off Saturday morning to allow a successful bike ride that raised money for trail improvements in honor of an avid local cyclist.
"What I saw was a bunch of people having a good time, reminiscing and creating memories," said Jeff Halter, an organizer of the Prairie Rivers Trail Ride.
"That's what she would have wanted," he said of Joan Meyer, the woman whose memory was honored by the event.
He described Meyer as a "quilter of people" who could bring people together just like a quilter brings pieces of fabric together.
He said there were 125 registered riders in the event.
"I'm just proud of the turnout we had," he said
Halter added that it generated between $8,000 and $10,000 for trail enhancements and beautification.
About 50 percent to 60 percent of the riders went from Fort Dodge to Badger, a 28 mile jaunt, according to Halter. The remainder went to Soldier Creek Winery on Paragon Avenue and returned to Fort Dodge.
In the past, the Prairie Rivers Trail Ride has benefited a different cause each year. Halter said going forward the ride will exclusively benefit trail improvements. Money generated by the ride will be deposited in an account for that purpose maintained by the Fort Dodge Community Foundation.
