The first Women's Equality Day Forum in Fort Dodge will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Dodge Public Library. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Women’s Equality Day is celebrated annually across the United States to commemorate the official certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on Aug. 26, 1920, which granted women the right to vote.
The Equality Day Forum will briefly discuss the history of the women's suffrage (right to vote) movement, followed by a panel discussion focusing on current women's issues, challenges, and concerns.
The panel will include Amber Rouse (moderator), Rachel Burns, who is a candidate for the Iowa House of Representatives; Ashley WolfTornabane, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives; Rhiannon Rippke-Koch; Cori Theroux; Belinda Cardona; and Meka Dillard.
Panelists will discuss various changes in women's rights and equality they have witnessed in their lifetimes, and the changes they believe have had the greatest impact on women and American society.
As Rouse explained, the panel will discuss "where women have been, where they are, and where they are going."
The event is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) Committee of the Webster County Democratic Party.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and admission is free. Refreshments will be served.
