The Fort Dodge City Council will consider an agreement that would keep a police officer assigned to local schools when it meets this evening.
The council will also consider a plan that would extend city water service to 18 residences outside the corporate limits in return for agreements that would ease the annexation of those properties in the future.
The council will meet at 6 p.m. today in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.
At least one police officer, known as a school resource officer, has been assigned to the Fort Dodge Community School District since 2017.
"This partnership has proven to improve school security, bridge the gap between youth and police and provided a mentor to students," Police Chief Dennis Quinn wrote in a report to the council.
Under the proposed agreement before the council, the school district would pay the city about $70,000 a year over the next three fiscal years to support the school resource officer program.
The properties seeking water service from the city are on Nathan Boulevard and Parker Drive, just west of the city. They currently receive their water from the Westwood Water Association, but that entity has recently experienced problems with its well.
