USDA to support project at Algona hospital

Rural Development issues grants

2 min read

ALGONA -- The radiology department of Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona will be updated with a boost from the United States Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program.

That financial support is coming in an indirect way, however.

USDA Rural Development Iowa Director Mike Sexton reported that the agency is making two $300,000 grants to two local entities which will in turn loan money to the hospital.

Cornbelt Power Cooperative in Humboldt will receive one of the grants. That money will be used to replenish an existing revolving loan fund it administers. Once the fund receives the money, the first loan will be made to Kossuth Regional Health Center for the radiology project.

A similar scenario involves Algona Municipal Utilities. That agency will also get a $300,000 grant to replenish a loan fund. It also will make its first loan to the hospital.

Details on the hospital project weren't immediately available. According to a statement from USDA Rural Development, the effort will modernize the radiology department and is expected to create one new job.

In a written statement, Sexton said Rural Development is "helping modernize services and outfit facilities to recover from disaster, strengthen local infrastructure and unleash economic prosperity for rural Iowa."
