Teens hospitalized after crash with train

Kossuth County accident under investigation

LAKOTA -- Two teenagers were hospitalized Tuesday following a crash with a train in rural Kossuth County.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala was southbound on 190th Avenue near Lakota when it collided with an eastbound train at a railroad crossing.

Alex Horak, of Lakota, saw the collision and called 911, deputies reported. He then pulled both occupants from the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames.

According to the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle was also just a few feet from rail cars loaded with ethanol.

A 16-year-old male driver and 12-year-old male passenger were taken by air ambulance to Rochester, Minnesota. According to the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office, both suffered head and upper body injuries and are currently at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

The Kossuth County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Kossuth County Emergency Management, Kossuth County EMS, Lakota EMS, Union Pacific Railroad employees, the Swea City, Ledyard, and Lakota fire departments, and the Air-Med units out of Waterloo and Des Moines.

The accident remains under investigation.
