Mark Crimmins, a Fort Dodge attorney who served on the Iowa Central Community College Board of Trustees for three decades and was the legal adviser to the city government, died Monday at age 64.
Crimmins was also a member of the City Council for a year in the early 1990s.
"We will miss him," Mayor Dave Flattery said. "He was not only a great family man, but also a great community man and a great legal man."
"He worked well with city officials," he added.
Flattery said that as city attorney Crimmins did a good job prosecuting nuisance violations. He added that Crimmins led the way in sorting out the "messy" legal situation around ownership of the Warden Plaza at 809 First Ave. S. and eventually secured city control of the property.
Crimmins was elected to the community college board in November 1994 and served for 31 years. He was the board president.
He was a 1979 graduate of St. Edmond High School and 1985 graduate of Creighton University Law School in Omaha, Nebraska.
He was an assistant Webster County attorney from 1985 to 1987, before entering private law practice.
In 1991, he was elected to represent Ward 4 on the City Council, but he resigned after one year because he moved to a new home outside of the ward.
For several years, Crimmins was the associate city attorney who helped longtime City Attorney Maurice Breen. When Breen died in 2011, he became city attorney. In that role he was under contract to the City Council while still maintaining his private law practice.
