Floral arrangements inspired by notable Fort Dodge buildings will be among the creations on display during an upcoming flower show.
Inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States, members of the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club made " Memories of Fort Dodge" the theme of their upcoming event.
The show will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2.
It will be in The Lions Den in Armstrong Park on Exposition Drive. Admission is free.
"This is going to be a fun show because it's about Fort Dodge history – a lot of Fort Dodge history," said Nancy Phillips, a spokeswoman for the club.
The show's theme, she said, is about "taking art and attaching it to memories of our community."
"There's nothing else like it in Fort Dodge as far as horticulture, flower design," she said.
Categories within the show include Fort Dodge Landmarks, Life in Fort Dodge and Memory Bank.
Within each of those broad categories there are specific competitions. For example, within the Memory Bank category is a competition called There's No Place Like Home in which people are challenged to create decorative house signs for their home. Phillips' entry in that competition has her house number on an old cupboard door, accented with moss, dried greenery and purple cone flowers.The Fort Dodge Landmarks category challenges entrants to make arrangements inspired by sites like Corpus Christi Church, the Hickory House restaurant, and the former Diamond's Clothing Store for Men.
