Major road job, apartment project underway on Third Avenue Northwest

Construction equipment is a common sight on Third Avenue Northwest lately.
That's because a section of the busy street is being rebuilt right next to the spot where new apartment buildings are being constructed.
Anyone driving through the area is forced to take a detour on Amvets Drive because Third Avenue Northwest between Seventh and 10th streets northwest has been torn up.
The first step was the installation of a new storm sewer and a new 16-inch diameter water main.
The completed street will have three lanes: one for eastbound traffic, one for westbound traffic and a center turning lane.
Rasch Construction, of Fort Dodge, has a $2,119,339 contract for the job.
City Engineer Austin Morrow previously reported that the work is scheduled to be done in mid-November.
Amvets Drive was the first Fort Dodge street to get a fresh coat of asphalt when the annual paving project started this spring so that it would be ready to handle the traffic from Third Avenue Northwest.
On the south side of the road that is being rebuilt, a 64-unit apartment complex called The River District is being constructed.
The River District is on about three acres along Third Avenue Northwest between Fifth and 10th streets northwest.
Construction started in late March and is expected to be completed by early next year.
The apartment complex is being built by Hoppe Development, of Lincoln, Nebraska. It will consist of eight buildings. The majority of the apartments will have two bedrooms, but there will be 10 units with four bedrooms.
The complex will include a community room, playground and dog park.
