For a variety of reasons, summer is often a difficult time to meet the nutritional needs of families in a community.
The three United Methodist churches in Fort Dodge are ready to help.
In an initiative focusing on both philanthropy and fellowship, the 2026 United Methodist Summer Meal Ministry begins with its first free hot-meal offering to local students and their families this Sunday from 5 until 6:30 p.m.
Trinity United Methodist, First United Methodist and Epworth United Methodist will then continue the suppertime gathering at each location every Sunday for the next 10 weeks, through Aug. 16.
“Over the past few months, leaders and pastors of the three United Methodist congregations (in Fort Dodge) came together to discuss how to support the important, ongoing efforts of feeding our children in the wider community,” said Bobbie Maltas, pastor at TUMC. “Additionally, due diligence was taken to have discussions with other entities providing food assistance to students and families to complement — rather than duplicate — the already-existing and valuable programs available in Fort Dodge.”
Maltas indicated the group consensus was to bring people together and provide some semblance of a routine for children who otherwise may go without regular meals when school is not in session. There are no requirements or judgements beforehand; the door will be open at all three locations for kids and family members alike.
“It was decided by the churches involved that they would offer a free meal to their surrounding neighborhoods as another opportunity in our community to combat hunger,” Maltas said. “At its heart, this ministry is about more than food. It’s a practical expression of God’s unconditional lovel and grace, offered freely to the children and families of our community.”
Donations and volunteers for the Sunday meals are always welcome, Maltas added.
Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 838 N. 25th St. in Fort Dodge. First United Methodist is at 1002 First Ave. N. Epworth United Methodist is at 2025 11th Ave. S.
In addition to Maltas, the pastor at First United Methodist is the Rev. Luke Fillmore. Epworth’s representative is Vickie Nelson.
