The primary election on Tuesday features a high profile race for the Republican nomination for governor, but when it comes to the local races, Webster County voters won’t have a whole lot to do in the voting booth.

There are no primary contests for local legislative or courthouse races. And most of the Webster County officials on the ballot are completely unopposed.

County Attorney Darren Driscoll, a Democrat, has no primary opponent and no general election foe. He was appointed to serve as county attorney in February 2018 to replace Jennifer Benson. He won his first term in the November 2018 general election and was reelected in 2022.

County Treasurer Brenda Angstrom, a Democrat, is also completely unopposed, with no primary or general election competition. She is seeking her third term.

Webster County Supervisor Austin Hayek, a Republican, is unopposed in District 1. He is seeking his second term. There is no Democrat on the ballot there.

The district he represents includes northeastern Fort Dodge, Badger, Vincent, Duncombe, the portion of Stratford that is in Webster County and rural areas in northeastern and eastern Webster County.

In District 4, Supervisor Niki Conrad, a Democrat, is unopposed. She is seeking her third term. District 4 includes central and northern parts of Fort Dodge.

The only courthouse race in 2026 is for the position of county recorder.

Incumbent Courtney Balkenende is unopposed for the Democratic nomination, and Deputy Auditor Tina Eldal is unopposed for the Republican nomination. They will face off in the November general election.

Balkenende was appointed to the post in July 2025 to replace Lindsay Laufersweiler. She is seeking her first full term.

In the state House of Representatives, Rep. Ann Meyer is unopposed for the Republican nomination in District 8. She is seeking her fifth term. Kristofer Williams is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

House District 8 includes Fort Dodge and eastern Webster County.

The race for the House District 7 seat will be a rematch between Republican incumbent Wendy Larson and Democrat Rachel Burns. Larson is seeking her first full term after winning a 2025 special election to replace former state Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City.

House District 7 includes Calhoun, Pocahontas, and Sac counties plus western Webster County.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A list of Webster County polling places is included in today’s edition of The Messenger.
