Pomeroy man convicted of sexual abuse of a child

ROCKWELL CITY — A Pomeroy man was found guilty of sexual abuse of a child Friday in the Iowa District Court for Calhoun County.

Jason Michael Peed, 39, was found guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child and two counts of sexual abuse in the second degree, arising from the sexual abuse of a child over a period of years, according to the Calhoun County Attorney’s Office.

The case was tried to the court on March 24, after Peed waived his right to a jury trial.

District Court Judge Kurt Stoebe found Peed guilty on all three counts.

Continuous sexual abuse of a child is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 50 years in prison; each count of sexual abuse in the second degree is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

All three offenses are forcible felonies, so a prison sentence is mandatory on each count, and the court cannot suspend any term or grant probation. Each count also carries a mandatory minimum under Iowa code.

Peed must serve 70 percent of the term, with no reduction for earned time or good conduct, before he is eligible for parole. He will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 31 in the Calhoun County Courthouse in Rockwell City.

At sentencing, the court will decide whether the terms will run concurrently or consecutively. Peed faces a prison sentence ranging from 50 years (with a 35-year mandatory minimum) to 100 years (with a 70-year mandatory minimum).

Peed is being held in custody pending sentencing.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated the matter. The Calhoun County Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case.
