Man faces charges after in chase in Humboldt, Pocahontas counties

GILMORE CITY — A man who led law enforcement officers on a pursuit through parts of Humboldt and Pocahontas counties Tuesday night was arrested Wednesday morning.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported that Clayton C. Nielsen, 41, of Gilmore City, has been charged with:

• Three counts of assault on persons in certain occupations while using or displaying a dangerous weapon

• Second degree criminal mischief

• Interference with official acts causing bodily injury

• Eluding

• Reckless driving

Nielsen’s bond was set at $30,000 cash only, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The incident that led to Nielsen’s arrest began at 6:12 p.m. Tuesday, when Humboldt County 911 dispatchers received a report of a man driving a pickup on Birch Avenue who was driving erratically and yelling at people.

Deputies found the truck and spoke to the driver. They reported that he was “extremely agitated and non-compliant.”

Deputies reported that he backed up the 2020 Ram pickup and hit a sheriff’s vehicle.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the pickup was chased to a nearby grass field, where the driver stopped. Deputies spoke to the man for awhile to de-escalate the situation. But the driver took off again, going through farm fields.

The driver eventually went into what deputies described as “heavily wooded quarry property” in Pocahontas County north of Gilmore City. The pickup became disabled and the man ran away. Law enforcement officers assisted by dogs and drones searched the area until about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning, deputies received a tip that the man was at a home on 340th Street near Gilmore City. They went there and arrested Nielsen without incident at about 10:15 a.m.

Deputies from Humboldt, Pocahontas, Palo Alto, Kossuth and Webster counties were involved in the search for Nielsen. Other agencies involved included the Pocahontas Police Department, Humboldt Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Humboldt County Emergency Management, Humboldt Community Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Service and the Gilmore City Fire Department.

Starting at $4.62/week.
