Pocahontas festival promises 2 days packed with fun

The Heritage Days Parade makes its way down the street last year as Pocahontas also celebrated its 155th birthday in 2025. This year's parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Main Street.

POCAHONTAS — Heritage Days is returning to Pocahontas this weekend with a full slate of events and live music to entertain people of all ages.

Topping the live music scene will be Atari, an ’80s band that will be performing at 8 p.m. Friday night.

“That is definitely one of the things we’re most excited about,” said Parker Aden, executive director of the Pocahontas Chamber of Commerce. “Who doesn’t love ’80s music?”

Other live music will be provided by Addie and Seamus, and the Larson Lee Trio.

Formerly held at the same time as the Pocahontas County Fair, Aden said Heritage Days organizers decided both events were getting big enough that they needed to be held at separate times.

New and returning activities on the two-day schedule include a trivia night and food-eating competition.

“It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a trivia night,” Aden said.

The trivia night will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday under the tent at Heritage Park.

Meanwhile, event organizers are working with the local Pizza Ranch to have the celebration’s first food-eating competition, with contests for kids, teens and adults. Aden said the cheese pizza slices will be scaled appropriately to each age group.

Unique to the Pocahontas celebration will be a county kaleidoscope tour set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gateway Park, which Pocahontas County Economic Development and MIDAS are partnering to provide.

Aden said participants can expect to see six to eight of the life-size kaleidoscopes on the tour. He added that those who want to ensure a spot on the tour should preregister by going to the Chamber’s website, as space is limited to 26 individuals.

He said preregistration is also encouraged for events like the food-eating contest and Oregon Wagon Trail Escape Room at New Way Ford to ensure participants save their spot. Aden said the sponsorships of local businesses enabled the escape room to happen both Friday and Saturday.

“We have so many local businesses that are willing to sponsor great events and make the celebration as fun as it is for everyone,” Aden said.

Some returning favorites include the Catholic Missionary Society selling kolaches Saturday morning at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and “The Cabin Tour” presentation by Dick Gruber at the Pocahontas Public Library.

Always a favorite at any town festival is the parade. This year’s parade grand marshal is Bill Strack, a retired art teacher from Pocahontas Area schools who Aden said is known for sharing his time and talents with the community.

“There are so many murals throughout our community and the county that he was a part of,” Aden said, either through organizing the project, supplying his art students or working on the murals himself.

“We are very grateful to honor him in this role,” Aden said. “He’s just a very kind, humble soul.”

Those who want to provide a Heritage Days parade entry can register either in advance or on Saturday morning before the 11 a.m. parade.

Aden encourages everyone to come out to Heritage Days, adding that there will be several free activities and a wide variety of events for people of all ages.

Also scheduled for the weekend are a pickle ball tournament on Friday, and a color run, farmers market, bags tournament, and free kids movie at the Rialto Theatre — all on Saturday.

The weekend festivities will end with fireworks at 10 p.m. Saturday.
