Former Humboldt fire chief laid to rest

Pallbearers place the casket of former Humboldt Fire Chief Sherman E. Silbaugh in the back of a 1934 REO Speedwagon fire truck following his funeral Friday afternoon at Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Silbaugh joined the volunteer fire department on Dec. 16, 1952, and served for 43 years. He was the fire chief for 25 of those years. He died May 1 at age 95.

The 1934 REO Speedwagon fire truck carrying the casket of former Humboldt Fire Chief Sherman E. Silbaugh pulls away from the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt following his funeral Friday afternoon. The old truck, escorted by a couple of newer ones, took Sherman to his final resting place at Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Silbaugh was a volunteer firefighter for 43 years and was the Humboldt fire chief for 25 of those years.
