The first-degree murder trial began Tuesday in Webster County District Court for a 39-year-old Fort Dodge man accused of shooting his roommate over Labor Day weekend last year.

Rolman Humberto Recinos Gonzales is accused of fatally shooting Justo Cruz Calindo, 45, in the head at 1:04 a.m. on Sept. 2 outside the garage of the apartment that the two shared in the 500 block of North 28th Street.

“You’re going to see for yourself how the story changes and changes and changes,” said Webster County Assistant County Attorney Bailey Cavanaugh in opening statements to the jury. “But the truth is that the defendant is responsible for the death of Mr. Cruz and that he is guilty of murder in the first-degree.”

Recinos Gonzales’ attorney, Katherine Flickinger, reserved opening statements.

The jury also heard from former Fort Dodge Police Department Officer Dylan Samuelson and Lt. Caitlin Carlyle who responded to the scene.

Recinos Gonzales’ trial continues today with the prosecutors expected to call the State Medical Examiner and then the defense will call its witnesses.

Recinos Gonzales also faces charges of trafficking stolen weapons and being a person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons.
