Two arrested in Pocahontas armed robbery

POCAHONTAS — A man and a teenager have been arrested and charged with robbing someone at gunpoint in Pocahontas Saturday afternoon.

Gideon Ayafa, 18, of Pocahontas, was charged with first-degree robbery and fifth-degree theft, according to Pocahontas police.

A 16-year-old resident of Humboldt was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery, going armed with intent, aggravated assault and fifth-degree theft, police reported. Police did not release his name.

Ayafa remains in the Pocahontas County Jail on a $25,300 bond. The juvenile is in a detention facility in Cherokee.

The robbery was reported at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of First Avenue Southwest. Police reported that an individual reported being robbed and that one of the robbers pointed a handgun at him.

The site of the robbery is across the street from the Pocahontas Elementary School. Police reported that there is no risk to the school, but extra patrols will be provided in the area.

Pocahontas County sheriff’s deputies and police from Laurens and Humboldt assisted Pocahontas police.
