Trent Bockoven, left, and his son, Mason Bockoven, of Superior Siding will be installing a roof in Fort Dodge this summer at no cost to a person or family in need. The nomination process is open through June 30.

Trent Bockoven will always be grateful for the way the Fort Dodge community has treated both his business and his family.

The owner of Superior Siding & Seamless Gutter and his son, Mason, were recently discussing the best way to show their appreciation for a nearly 50-year relationship here that started in the professional mold but very quickly became personal.

“Mason and I were talking about how we had a really busy year (in 2025) with the hail storm especially,” Trent Bockoven said. “We realized just how many repeat customers we’ve had through the years who have trusted us over and over again. As contractors, that goes a long way.

“We didn’t want that moment of appreciation to go unnoticed from our end.”

They wanted to give back. The family decided to create a Superior Siding “free roof giveaway” contest, with nominations being accepted from now until June 30 for a Fort Dodge individual or family in need.

The website https://superiorsidingroofpromo.com/ states, “we want to give back to someone in our Fort Dodge community who truly needs it — a brand-new roof, on us. Nominate someone facing hardship. It’s our way of saying thank you to the community that has supported us for four generations.”

The company lists examples of candidates, such as a veteran who could use a helping hand; a senior on a fixed income; a family going through a difficult time; a single parent trying to make ends meet; or someone dealing with medical challenges or other unexpected hardships.

Trent Bockoven said “originally we were thinking maybe windows or gutters.” The more they discussed it, though, “we just thought doing something bigger made sense.”

“If you have a leaky roof, it’s a really bad situation to be in,” Bockoven said. “So we decided this would have the greatest impact. We know a lot of people out there who could benefit from something like this but simply can’t afford it.

“We’re very excited to offer this. We’re hoping it really takes off over these next few months and that we’ll have a lot of applications between now and the end of June.”

Superior Siding was founded by Don Bockoven and two partners in 1978. Trent’s father, Brian, joined the leadership team in 1993. Trent became a full-timer in 1997 and part owner in 2012, then gained sole ownership when Brian retired in 2023.

The company provides roofing, siding, windows, seamless gutters and covers, soffit or fascia installation and attic and sidewall insulation to the area.

“We often feel like we can’t go anywhere in town without seeing someone we’ve had as a customer, and it’s usually a person who has hired us for (multiple projects),” Bockoven said. “We’re a family-owned and operated business, but our customers are also a part of that family. A fourth-generation company is very rare, and it’s gotten to this point because Fort Dodge has been so good to us.

“This is a way of acknowledging that and showing how thankful we are.”

Mason, who joined the business full-time as a fourth-generation Bockoven a few years ago, said, “when I walk into a house and have a conversation with a person who had a roof sold by my grandpa and (installed) by us maybe even decades back — that means something to me.”

“I think it speaks to our character and commitment to the quality work we do as a company, and also, the loyalty we’ve shown to Fort Dodge and that Fort Dodge has shown to us,” Mason said. “People know what to expect and the standard we’ve set. We were born and raised here and the company has been a part of the community for almost 50 years. It’s about consistency — building relationships and trust.”

After the nomination process ends, the company hopes to have a recipient selected by July 15. The work would still be done by the end of the summer, Bockoven said.

An independent committee will carefully consider the nominated candidates.

“I also wanted to point out that there are no strings attached or hidden fees,” Bockoven said. “You don’t even have to be a prior customer of ours. What you see (with the giveaway contest) is what you get.”

Qualifying guidelines are listed on the website. A person or family must live within the Fort Dodge city limits, own and live in the home, and cannot nominate themselves.

The website states, “all nominations are reviewed with care and kept completely confidential.”

If all goes well, Bockoven is expecting this to become an annual project.

“We have the website set up and confirmed for the next 10 years,” Bockoven said. “We’re hoping it really takes off and is something we can do every summer moving forward.

“A lot of people or families have fallen on hard times or faced a rough stretch in their life. A roof is expensive. We want to help.”

Starting at $4.94/week.
