Robots to handle driving range chores

Council buys machines for Lakeside

A pair of robots will be taking over some of the routine maintenance of the driving range at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course soon.

Golfers won’t be seeing any androids that look like they came out of a science fiction movie. But they may see a couple of machines working around the range without any people controlling them.

The City Council on Monday purchased a robotic mower and a robotic machine that will pick up the golf balls strewn around the range.

In a report to the council, Assistant Recreation Director Hannah Angstrom wrote that the robotic mower will be automatically scheduled to go out at night during the week.

“Adding a robotic range mower to Lakeside’s equipment inventory will help reduce the time seasonal and fulltime staff spend mowing the range, allowing them to better use their time for other needs on the golf course and to close the range to patrons less often,” she wrote.

The robotic mower was purchased from Van-Wall Equipment Inc., of Madrid, for $32,448.

A second robot would be programmed to collect the golf balls from the range every two hours.

That machine was purchased from Van-Wall Equipment Inc. for $31,015.

The council also moved to relieve some traffic woes at Kenyon Road and Triton Plaza by buying new control equipment for the traffic signals there.

A video detection system was purchased from General Traffic Controls, of Spencer, for $26,800.

The system that was purchased is the same as what is already in use at six other intersections on Kenyon Road.

Starting at $4.94/week.
