WEBSTER CITY — If you love theatre, Webster City is the place to be this weekend, with both the opening of the show “Fiddler on the Roof Sr.” tonight, and the full day of workshops on Saturday as part of the Iowa Community Theatre Association’s Bi-ennial Convention.
The performances and workshops will be held at the WCCT Performing Arts Center located at 1001 Willson Avenue. The ICTA Awards banquet and gala will be held at the Briggs Woods Conference Center located at 2501 Briggs Woods Trail. The two day event brings workshops that help actors and organizers of community theatre share information and educate each other about ways to produce a successful show, to develop skills and to make friends with others who enjoy live community theater.
Webster City is hosting this event for the third time, the last one held in 1993. The opening production on Friday night, of “Fiddler on the Roof Sr.” is the first production of the Over the Speed Limit Players, a new troupe of actors who are over the age of 55.
Two performances of the show will be held — at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday.
This version of the musical contains the characters, storyline, and songs that are familiar to audiences, just condensed to a bit over an hour. Both musical scores and scenes have been reduced to allow the storyline to flow, but keeps the show shorter for both actors and the audience.
Loween Getter has been directing the show, with Dane Barner serving as musical director.. Technical direction is by Sam Ose and Sally Evans.
One of the workshops held on Saturday will be about the creation of the senior theatre, such as the “Over the Speed Limit Players.”
Senior Broadway shows are a new concept developed by Music Theatre International for actors over the age of 55. The performance will introduce this musical option for other community theatres to consider.
At the end of the day, events will move to the Briggs Woods Conference Center. ICTA will be announcing awards during the banquet held there on Saturday night. Several of the Webster City productions have been nominated for excellence in directing, acting, and a variety of technical areas in plays and musicals. Among the nominees are WCCT volunteers who were involved in “Of Men and Cars,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “The Mocha Cafe Murders” during 2025.
To register for the workshops, go to the Iowa Community Theatre Association website, at www.iowatheatres.org to register. The cost for the workshops, Friday night and all day Saturday are $110. If attending the workshops and banquet on Saturday it is $85.
The two shows of “Fiddler on the Roof” are on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The cost to attend the first productions of the Over The Speed Limit Players, is $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased through the WCCT website or at the door.
