Two Fort Dodge residents were honored by LeadingAge Iowa, an association representing non-profit aging service providers.
Sharon Hickey was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award by LeadingAge Iowa. The award is given to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to preserving the dignity, well-being, health, independence, and fullness of life of residents.
Hickey was surprised with the award announcement by her son, Patrick Hickey, at a Friendship Haven celebratory breakfast.
“Sharon represents the very best of what it means to be a volunteer,” said Friendship Haven Director of Development Jen Lane. “She doesn’t seek recognition; she simply sees a need and steps in to serve. Whether she’s leading a team, supporting families during difficult moments, or creating opportunities for others to belong, she brings kindness, dedication, and a quiet excellence to everything she does. We are incredibly grateful for the difference she makes every day. Her impact here at Friendship Haven is truly immeasurable.”
Hickey participates in the chorus for Vespers services and leads the funeral committee, coordinating luncheons for families. She also assists with community events and oversees operations of the on-campus convenience store, including volunteer coordination, inventory management, and daily functions. In 2025, Hickey recorded more than 260 volunteer hours, reflecting a significant and ongoing commitment to the organization.
Tim Burns was awarded Board Member of the Year by LeadingAge Iowa. Burns has served on the Friendship Haven board since 2016 and was board chair from 2020 to 2024. According to LeadingAge Iowa, the award is given to board members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and actions to enhance and enrich the lives of aging persons.
“He is a person of great integrity and truly embodies the vision of people living full lives with faith, passion, and purpose through his words, and more importantly, his actions,” said Friendship Haven Board Chair Matt Johnson. “He always puts others above himself, and I am honored to witness his tireless service and dedication to our community.”
“As CEO, I have always known I could count on him to offer guidance, perspective, and steady leadership, added Julie Thorson, CEO and President of Friendship Haven. “I have learned a great deal from his reflective leadership style, and it has been a true pleasure to work alongside him.”
Both Hickey and Burns will receive their awards May 6-7 at a statewide recognition ceremony in Des Moines.
