FD council to hold property tax hearing

Proposed levy is 14 cents higher than current levy

The Fort Dodge City Council will have a public hearing on the proposed property tax levy this evening followed by a special meeting on sanitary sewer work.

The public hearing will begin at 5 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

The proposed property tax levy for the fiscal year that begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2027, will be considered.

That proposed levy is $20.89 per $1,000 of taxable value.

That is 14 cents higher than the current levy of $20.75 per $1,000 of taxable value.

The 14 cent increase is proposed to support the Dodger Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus service, which is facing increased costs and decreased federal funding.

After this evening’s hearing, the proposed property tax levy can be reduced, but it cannot be increased.

At 5:30 p.m., the council will have a special meeting regarding the Community Sewer Initiative, an extensive effort to upgrade sanitary sewers that has been underway since about 2019. It is paid for with a separate fee on monthly utility bills.

The council will review the progress made so far and consider hiring McClure Engineering Co., of Fort Dodge, to do some more work on the project.

Starting at $4.94/week.
