Couple accused of starving dog to death

A Coalville couple faces multiple criminal charges for reportedly starving their pets, including a dog who died, according to court records.

Joshua A. Valley, 38, and Grace A. Christenson, 44, both of 23661 Garfield St., were arrested by Webster County sheriff’s deputies and charged with animal neglect with serious injury or death. Both were also charged with two counts of animal neglect with no injury or death. Additionally, Valley was charged with violation of probation.

In the criminal complaints filed against them, deputies wrote that a deceased dog was seized from the couple’s property. The animal was “severely emaciated” and a veterinarian determined that the cause of death was starvation, the criminal complaints state.

According to the criminal complaints, the couple surrendered a second dog and a rabbit, both of which were underweight.

Valley and Christenson were arrested Monday morning and made their initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court the same day.

They both waived their right to a preliminary hearing on the charge of animal neglect with serious injury or death. That means the cases against them will proceed to arraignment and trial.

Action on the lesser offenses of animal neglect with no injury or death was postponed for 180 days.

Further proceedings will be scheduled on Valley’s charge of violation of probation.

Magistrate William H. Habhab issued an order prohibiting Valley and Christenson from owning or having custody of animals.
