The fort dodge city council approved another urban deer hunt for this fall, from Sept. 19 through Jan. 10, 2027. During the most recent hunt, 22 deer were taken, according to city officials.
Archers bagged 22 deer during a hunt in Fort Dodge that started last fall and ended in January.
Police Capt. Matt Lundberg presented the results of the urban controlled bow hunt to the City Council Monday.
He said the 22 deer taken in the recent hunt was a slight decrease from the 25 taken in the 2024-2025 hunt.
There were no complaints or issues reported with the hunt, according to Lundberg
He said the planned hunt dates for the upcoming season are Sept. 19 through Jan. 10, 2027. Those dates will have to be approved by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission.
The proposed hunt would be the fourth one in the city limits.
Councilman Terry Moehnke asked about how much Police Department time is required to manage the hunt.
“We’ve got it pretty streamlined,” Lundberg replied. “It’s not very time intensive.”
In other business Monday, the council:
• Gave initial approval to updated fire and building codes, which must be approved two more times to become law.
• Approved a 10-year-lease with Reagen Outdoor Advertising, of Rochester, Minnesota, for a billboard on city property at Hawkeye Avenue and Third Avenue Northwest. The company will pay the city $1,200 per year.
• Purchased a rough mower for Lakeside Municipal Golf Course from Van Wall Equipment Inc., of Madrid for $46,100.
• Purchased two loaders for the Public Areas Department from R & J Material Handling of Fort Dodge for $115,326.04.
• Agreed to give Webster County $478,000 to help pay for paving 160th Street between Nelson Avenue and Paragon Avenue. That road is along the north side of Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex.
• Hired Riley-Armstrong Plumbing & Heating to demolish buildings at 1801 First Ave. S. and 605 S. 14th St. The company will be paid $49,907.
