City council to consider land buy for firehouse

The Fort Dodge City Council will consider buying land for a second firehouse when it meets tonight.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.

In the runup to the March 2025 referendum in which Webster County voters approved a new property tax to support emergency medical care as an essential service, plans for a second firehouse on the city’s west side were announced.

Building a station there would improve response times to the western part of the city and would enable ambulances to have fast access to U.S. Highway 169 so that they can more quickly reach areas of rural Webster County where the Fire Department provides ambulance service.

The selected site is in the 300 block of A Street near Avenue D.

The property would be purchased from Eldon and Karen Rossow, of Fort Dodge, for $85,000. That money would come from the city’s share of the EMS tax revenue.

Also tonight, the council will begin the process of adopting updated fire and building codes.

It will also consider buying some equipment for the Recreation and Public Areas departments. The council will also consider awarding a contract to demolish a pair of rundown buildings.

Starting at $4.94/week.
