A Fort Dodge firefighter hoses down a deck on a Fort Dodge house Saturday afternoon. A fire started on the deck and damaged two front rooms on the home’s second floor, plus some exterior siding, soffit and fascia.

A cigarette on a second-story deck ignited a Saturday afternoon fire that damaged a Fort Dodge home.

No one was hurt in the fire at 1235 Fifth Ave. N., which was reported just before 3 p.m.

According to Fire Chief Matt Price, a resident of the house reported that she had been smoking on the small outdoor deck on the home’s second floor. When she was done, she threw the cigarette in a can on the deck.

Sometime later, a neighbor knocked on the door and told her there was a fire on the deck, Price said. He said the resident tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out.

Firefighters used two hoselines to put out the flames. Price said the fire spread into the walls and ceilings of the front two rooms on the second floor. It also burned siding, soffit and fascia on the exterior.

Fort Dodge police and Webster County sheriff’s deputies assisted firefighters at the scene. They were on scene for about an hour.

Fifth Avenue North between 12th and 13th streets was closed while firefighters worked. The intersection of 12th Street and Fifth Avenue North was also closed.

The house was built in 1907, according to online records of the Webster County Assessor’s Office. Those records list Jonathan A. Gottschalk, of Fort Dodge, as the deed holder and Jackson B. Morquett, of Fort Dodge, as the contract holder on the property.

Starting at $4.94/week.
