A large branch of a tree fell in the gusty winds Wednesday at the corner of North 13th Street and 10th Avenue North in Fort Dodge.
About 3,000 MidAmerican Energy customers in Webster County were without electricity for a couple hours Wednesday afternoon when a grass fire got too close to an electrical substation.
The fire did not spread into the substation near U.S. Highway 169 and 190th Street, according to Geoff Greenwood, a spokesman for the utility. But he said the substation was shut down as a safety precaution at 2:45 p.m.
At about 5 p.m. Greenwood said power had been restored to all but 189 customers.
The utility company became aware of the problem at 2:15 p.m. when a circuit interruption was detected at that substation, according to Greenwood.
He said there were no other large power outages in the Fort Dodge area.
The incident happened during a period of sustained high winds Wednesday afternoon.
The winds knocked down a couple of trees and large tree branches throughout Fort Dodge. Greenwood said some homes may have lost electricity after wind gusts or fallen tree limbs knocked down the electrical service line to the building.
Multiple grass fires were reported in Webster County Wednesday afternoon.
