The bridge over Gypsum Creek on Fifth Avenue South will get an overhaul this summer. The City Council on Monday awarded an $844,000 contract for the job. The bridge will remain open, with traffic limited to one lane.

Drivers on busy Fifth Avenue South on the east side of Fort Dodge will have to contend with a major bridge project this summer.

The City Council on Monday approved a contract with Jasper Construction Services Inc., of Newton, to do the work at a cost of $844,300.78.

The city received $1.5 million from the federal government to pay for the project.

The bridge is in the 3300 block of Fifth Avenue South near Fort Dodge Memorial Park Cemetery. It was built in 1955 and spans Gypsum Creek.

The work will consist of replacing the bridge deck, constructing a five-foot wide sidewalk on its south side, plus repairing curbs, joints and storm water inlets.

City Manager David Fierke said the bridge will remain open during the project, with traffic reduced to one lane.

Also on Monday, Catherine Dawson asked the council to enact sanctuary policies that would limit cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

She said 32 people have died in ICE custody.

“They’re a threat against all United States citizens,” she said.

None of the council members replied to her request.

Starting at $4.94/week.
