People driving around Fort Dodge this summer will see a lot of work being done as a result of contracts awarded Monday by the City Council.
The council hired companies to replace a water main, pave streets plus paint lines and other markings on the streets.
Councilmembers Todd McCubbin and Megan Secor were absent from the otherwise unanimous votes to award the contracts.
All of the work is expected to be done this summer, according to Chad Schaeffer, the city’s chief development officer.
Replacing a water main under North Seventh Street near Loomis Park that has broken several times is one of the biggest jobs for which a contract was awarded Monday.
The council hired Rasch Construction, of Fort Dodge, to do the work at a cost of $2,562,165.
Other bidders for the job were Doyle Construction, Fort Dodge $2,961,030.50; On Track Construction, Nevada, $3,090,890; Gerhke Inc., Eldora, $3,225,163.78; and S. M. Hentges & Sons Inc., Jordan, Minnesota, $3,523,591.80.
Fort Dodge Asphalt was hired to repave parts of 14 streets at a cost of $1,964, 885.06. It was the only bidder for the job.
Cardenas Concrete, of Fort Dodge, was hired to do concrete patch repairs on various streets throughout the city. The company will be paid $202,637.
Other bidders for the job were Platinum Construction, Fort Dodge, $205,861.25; TK Concrete, Pella, $244,420; Castor Construction, Fort Dodge, $246,795.20; and Jensen Builders Ltd, Fort Dodge, $294,160.
The council also hired Weikert Contracting Inc., of Cedar Falls, to paint street lines at a cost of $80,118.90. That company was the only bidder for the job.
The work resulting from Monday’s council meeting will not be the only major projects to be done in and around Fort Dodge this summer.
The intersection of Second Avenue North and 15th Street will be rebuilt. Just north of the city, the intersection of Nelson Avenue and 170th Street will be converted to a roundabout. Contracts for two other water main replacement jobs were awarded previously.
And Schaeffer said there is a chance that the replacement of the Highland Park Bridge could begin this fall.
