The second of those novels written by Dan Prochaska, titled “Cinnamon Soldier New Beginning,” is being published this week.

It is the sequel to “Cinnamon Soldier Toast” released in September.

“I want people to be aware of what the veterans are going through because a lot of times they don’t talk about it,” he said. “That’s the main reason I wrote these books.”

Both books feature Daniel Warren, a Vietnam War veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Warren moves to a small town and becomes friends with Sarah, who owns a cafe there.

Throughout his military service, Warren kept a recipe for cinnamon soldier toast in his knap sack. He discovers that Sarah has that same recipe.

In the second book, the cafe has become a gathering place for veterans. Warren is busy planning the community’s Veterans Day observance. By the book’s conclusion, he and Sarah are engaged.

The second book also includes a listing of organizations that provide help to veterans.

Prochaska said helping his cousin, the late Richard Jones, of Fort Dodge, inspired him to want to write about veterans. He said Jones, who died Feb. 21, 2025, “told me some really God awful stories.”

He said Jones had been exposed to Agent Orange, a herbicide used to kill jungle foliage in Vietnam, and the chemical “destroyed his nervous system.”

Prochaska has written five books, including “The Life of Webb Vincent,” a prominent figure in Fort Dodge and the gypsum industry.
