Carbon monoxide incident sends two to hospital

Poisonous gas came from generator

Two people were taken to the hospital Thursday morning after being exposed to a high level of carbon monoxide in a Fort Dodge house.

The Fire Department was called to 1021 S. 25th St. at 10:34 a.m.

Capt. Jeff Hill said firefighters found a high level of carbon monoxide in the house. He said the carbon monoxide came from a generator that was running inside the house.

Firefighters shut off the generator and got everyone outside. Then they used fans to ventilate the house.

Hill said three people were checked at the scene and two of them were taken by ambulance to UnityPoint Health — Trinity Regional Medical Center.

“This just highlights how important it is to not run any kind of generator or engine in an enclosed space like your house or your garage,” Hill said. “They just have to always be operated outside.”

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless poisonous gas that replaces oxygen in the blood. Exposure to it can cause sickness, organ damage and death.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.
