Iowa Central’s Bloomquist, Beneke, Shimkat honored with Outstanding Community College Awards

Iowa Central Community College proudly celebrates three distinguished honorees recognized at the Community Colleges for Iowa Convention held in Des Moines on Wednesday. Each year, the Outstanding Community College Awards highlight exceptional faculty, staff, and alumni from Iowa’s community colleges — individuals who demonstrate excellence, leadership, and a commitment to advancing accessible education across the state.
Paul Bloomquist — Outstanding Faculty Award
Paul Bloomquist, this year’s Outstanding Faculty Award recipient, consistently goes above and beyond for Iowa Central Community College. A devoted music educator, Bloomquist’s passion for the arts is evident in every rehearsal, performance, and classroom interaction. His enthusiasm is contagious, creating an environment where students feel motivated, supported, and inspired.
Known for always putting students first, Bloomquist works diligently to ensure they receive a high-quality, well-rounded education. His leadership and commitment exemplify the values of being humble, hungry, and smart — making him a powerful influence within the college’s fine arts community and a deserving honoree at this year’s convention.
Tom Beneke — Outstanding Staff Award
Tom Beneke, vice president of Student Services, has been named the Outstanding Staff Award recipient for 2025. A proud Iowa Central graduate, Beneke has dedicated his career to fostering student success and expanding opportunities on campus. Under his leadership, Iowa Central has strengthened retention and completion initiatives, broadened student support services, and enhanced the overall student experience through athletics, activities, and inclusive programming.
Beneke, is widely respected for his approachable leadership style, collaborative mindset, and unwavering commitment to students. Colleagues and students alike recognize him as a mentor who builds connections, drives innovation, and puts people first. His efforts to advance access, equity, and community engagement have made a lasting impact on Iowa Central, making him a fitting recipient of the Staff Member of the Year award.
Lisa Shimkat — Outstanding Alumni Award
This year’s Outstanding Alumni Award honors Lisa Shimkat, who serves as the associate administrator of Field Operations for the U.S. Small Business Administration. In this national leadership role, Lisa oversees 68 District Offices and 10 Regional Offices across the country, guiding the SBA’s field network to ensure that small businesses have access to critical capital, contracting support, and development resources.
Shimkat works closely with SBA resource partners, lenders, and economic development organizations to strengthen entrepreneurial support systems and promote economic growth nationwide. Her service exemplifies the profound impact Iowa Central alumni have in communities across the United States.
Shimkat’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to empowering small businesses make her an exceptional representative of Iowa Central Community College.
