Fort Dodge Choral Society’s Christmas concert nears

Audience to join in singing carols with the group

The Fort Dodge Choral Society will perform its annual Christmas concert on Sunday, but members of the group won’t be the only ones singing.

The concert will begin at 2:30 p.m. in First United Methodist Church with a Chrstmas carol sing-along in which people in the audience will join Choral Society members in singing traditional holiday favorites.

Then at 3 p.m. the society members will begin their main performance, featuring “Magnificat in C.”

Admission is $12 per person with society members admitted free. The church is located at 127 N. 10th St.

“Maginficat in C” was composed by Franz Schubert in the early 1800s. Jacob Pederson, the society’s artistic director, explained the piece in the recent issue of “Choral Passages,” the society’s newsletter.

“The Maginficat is a Latin text that is spoken from the perspective of the Virgin Mary praising the Lord that her child will become the Messiah that fulfills God’s promise to Abraham,” he wrote.

Two other songs will be sung by society members. One of those songs is “Christmas Pipes,” which Pederson wrote was made famous by “Celtic Woman.”

The other song will be “Lo, How a Rose E’re Blooming.”
