Voters easily approve funding for FDSH projects
Measure has 75 percent majority
Voters in the Fort Dodge Community School District voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to invest $42 million in renovating the senior high school.
The voters approved an extension of a current levy to make that possible.
The measure had to be approved by a 60 percent majority of those voting in order to be approved.
With one precinct yet to be counted late Tuesday night, the measure was approved by a margin of 75.14 percent to 24.86 percent, according to unofficial election results released by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate.
“I think first, a big thank you to everyone who went out and voted for this,” district Superintendent Josh Porter said Tuesday night. “We’re really happy with the results.”
“I’m super-excited for the future of the Fort Dodge schools and more importantly for the students that this impacts,” he added.
According to the unofficial election results, there were 3,337 yes votes and 1,104 no votes, with one precinct left to report.
With the borrowing authority extended, Porter said he will work with the district’s Board of education to figure out time lines and project designs.
The planned work will impact just about every area of the 1958 vintage high school, some of which looks the same as the day it opened.
The district has a levy of $2.48 per $1,000 of taxable value that is dedicated to paying off bond debt. That levy will be extended with no tax increase as a result of Tuesday’s vote.
