Taking center stage with Makinley Nore

Marching band has been a love that Makinley Nore won’t soon forget.
As her final days wind down as a senior at Fort Dodge Senior High, Nore will miss the time with the band.
“I am definitely going to miss marching band the most,” Nore said. “I think that marching band specifically is such a fun and emotional moment. All of the hard work and hours of practice really pay off at our competitions.
“It can get really emotional thinking that this is all going away so soon. You really build a family with these people because band is a part of our everyday routine.”
Nore, who started band in the fifth grade, enjoyed her time with the band as a Dodger.
“When you first get to high school and join marching band, the first step is band camp,” Nore said. “It’s basically an entire week that you spend with the band for eight hours a day. This is when you really get to know your section.
“Throughout the year, you really get to know everyone and start to build a ‘family.’ In my years of being in band it’s usually a judgement free zone and everyone treats each other with kindness and respect.”
Band isn’t all about making music, it’s about relationships that are built with your peers.
“I think the best part of band is the fact that you have so much fun with everyone,” Nore said. “Band may seem boring to outsiders, but it’s really a whole bunch of kids that are involved in so many other things.”
“You are able to be serious when you have to but also be able to have fun while doing it.”
Nore is also involved in concert band, jazz band, choir, musicals, large group speech and cheerleading.
“I think that involving yourself in different sports or clubs is an important thing,” Nore said. “I would rather be spending my time doing something to help the community or just simply have fun rather than sitting at home.
“I think that you are able to really build a relationship with your group leaders and friends when you involve yourself in things.”
Nore has also been involved in cheer, showing her Dodger spirit and competitive nature.
“I first joined the FDSH cheerleading team my freshman year,” Nore said. “All four years, I have cheered for the football team and the basketball teams. It’s definitely a lot of work to try and learn every cheer and how to stunt all within a short amount of time it felt like.
“I really like how you build so you must trust each other and be able to count on them.”
Wearing the Red and Black and being a Dodger has been a big part of high school for Nore.
“Being a Dodger means to really put yourself out there and show your school spirit,” Nore said. “You should enjoy what you do and be proud while doing it.
“Whether you’re a part of the cheer team, dance team, any sports teams, you are showing your Dodger spirit just by participating in something and showing your full support and appreciation.”
Nore’s first musical was in seventh grade.
“The first ever musical I was in was Snow White, and I played the role of the bad witch,” Nore said. “Additionally, I casted in The Little Luncheonette of Terror my eighth grade year and played as one of the high school students.
“Once I got into high school, I did some of the plays and musicals, such as Tuck Everlasting, Anastasia, and Radium Girls. I really enjoyed being able to learn and grow with such an amazing group of people. It’s such a fun environment to be in.
“Whether you are singing, dancing, or helping stage crew, there is always something to do. I really like that it can keep you busy but also keep you entertained while having fun.”
Joining speech has been a blessing for Nore, as it helped her break out of her shell.
“By joining speech it has taught me many things. I used to be a very introverted girl, while I still am at times, speech has taught me to be outgoing, confident, and much more. It improves your listening and critical thinking skills,” Nore said. “When competing for large group speech, after my own performance, I go and listen and watch other people’s performances. It is fun to see how much everyone improves each practice and performance.”
Choir has helped bring Nore closer to other students.
“I love how choir brings people together to create something so beautiful with their voices,” Nore said. “When you blend each part together, it really brings you that satisfaction, and it allows everyone to connect. Plus, it’s a fun way to express your emotions and enjoy music.”
There have been many memories made as a Dodger, but stepping out into the world is something Nore is ready to do.
“I am looking forward to being able to get involved in the healthcare community after I graduate,” Nore said. “I really enjoy the satisfaction of being able to help others and make them happier.
“I want everyone to know that I am always someone you can count on. No matter what the situation may be, I will always support you and be there for you.”
A big part of Nore’s life has been God. He is someone that she has been able to go to in times of need.
“My top influence I would say is God,” Nore said. “My faith over the past year has been a journey. God has helped me through everything when I thought no one was there.
“My second biggest influence has been my mom. My mom is the best mom, friend, and best friend I could ask for. She’s always there to help and support me when no one else is.”
After high school Nore plans on going to Iowa Central and Iowa State for my undergraduate degree in biology and then plans on going to the University of Iowa for medical school.”
Nore has lived by the statement of “Put your faith in Jesus, and he will guide the way.”
